To the President of the European Parliament

Object: ILVA siderurgic plants in Taranto, Italy

Dear President,

In the name of the Association Fondo AntiDiossina and PeaceLink, we would like to thank you for your recent statement on the ILVA issue and for the support you extended to the inhabitants of Taranto.

As you know, the prosecutors of Taranto are conducting an efficient battle against the Riva Group for its production policy which –according to the pre-judgement- has been implemented in full knowledge of the deadly consequences for the population, in line with its sole financial interest.

The ILVA plants continue to produce at the same rhythm and with the same effects. The Italian Government has signed a Protocol in November 2012 ( AIA, “Autorizzazione Integrata Ambientale”) by which the modalities of production should have been changed and adapted in order for a renovation of the plants and their process of normalization to take place.

Reality on the ground and our own continued measures of surveillance as to the plants’ emissions do not indicate any significant improvement – and the consequences of heavy pollution continue to be paid for by the population.

We would thus like to ask your help in continue bringing this subject to the fore of the European Parliament and the international media, conscious as we are that the Italian Government considers the AIA Protocol as its final step in this affair.

We also believe that the plants’ emissions entail that through ILVA, Italy is heavily infringing EU directives on industrial emissions and pollution, an issue on which we will also be writing to the European Commissioner for Environment.

We have organized a protest for the 7th of April, two days before the sentence of the Constitutional Court of Italy which will pronounce itself on the struggle of powers in act between the Government and Taranto’s prosecutors who have ordered the production to be put on hold : according to them, the Environment Integrated Authorization (AIA) cannot fundamentally alter the quantity of dioxin and other toxic emissions neither ameliorate the very difficult sanitary situation on the ground.

We stand ready to meeting you in Brussels, should you wish so, and bring you more details on this file. You are of course also welcome to join us in the protest.

Best regards,
